CLEAR™ Protocol
What is CLEAR™?
Implementing CLEAR™ prevents misdirection and elevates operational execution across teams:
-
By explicitly separating outputs (what is produced) from outcomes (the actual impact of the work), it ensures that a team’s daily activities directly drive strategic goals.
-
Through non-punitive feedback loops and an emphasis on learning from mistakes, CLEAR™ builds deep workplace trust and encourages open dialogue.
-
Integrating specific expectations and clear accountability structures reduces the ambiguity that leads to early turnover, project blocks, or missed deadlines.
-
Frameworks like the CLEAR™ Goal Setting Worksheet naturally incorporate inclusivity and fairness checks, forcing leaders to consider who benefits and who might be left out during project design.

Clarify the Context
Purpose: Start with the WHY behind the task. Ensure your team understands the importance of the task and how it fits into the larger project or company's goals.
Scope: Explain the breadth of the task, including what it does and does not entail, to avoid misdirection.
Lay Out Specifics
Task Details: Break down the task or expectation into smaller, manageable components. Describe what success looks like for each part.
Resources: Identify the tools, information, personnel, or other resources that are available or required.
Constraints: Make any limitations clear regarding budget, resources, or time.
Establish Expectations
Performance Standards: Define the criteria for success, so there is no ambiguity about what constitutes a job well done.
Deadlines: Specify when the task should be started and completed. If applicable, set milestones for larger tasks.
Assign Responsibility
Roles: Clearly designate who is responsible for each aspect of a task or project. If necessary, explain the interdependency of roles within the team.
Accountability: Establish a system for follow-ups and check-ins. Explain how progress will be monitored and discussed.
Recap and Request Feedback
Summarize: After giving instructions, recap the key points to reinforce understanding. This acts as a quality check for comprehensiveness and coherence.
Clarification: Ask open-ended questions like, "What are your thoughts?" or "Do you need clarification on any part?" to encourage dialogue.
Feedback Loop: Establish an open, non-punitive channel for questions and clarifications moving forward. Reinforce that mistakes are part of the learning process.
